Sensory Game – DIY

Sensory Game

This last week in Anchorage we had a lot of fun with our spin-off of the TV Show “Fear Factor”. We created a sensory version called “Sensory Factor!” where you had to use your sense of feel to guess a hidden unknown object!

Sensory bins are something you can create easily with a little imagination and a few items around the house.

We challenge you to test your sense of feeling with a friend or family member by setting up your own sensory game!

DIY Sensory Bins

You can create your own sensory bin fun at home with just a few items around the house. We filled a pan full of a single item. If you are limited on supplies it’s okay to find just 1-2 pieces of each item.

1. Collect your items. Look for anything safe to handle with no sharp edges that might cut you.

Possible items may include:

  • A bag of dried beans
  • Glass pebbles
  • Shaving cream
  • Plastic beads or buttons
  • Homemade slime
  • Macaroni
  • A bag of dried rice
  • Seashells
  • River Rocks

ALTERNATIVE: If you want to do this on a smaller scale or for a child – collect at least two of each item. You’ll hide one of each item and display the others together for them to decide what they are feeling.

2. Create your mystery box.

  • Cut holes in the sides of the box that are big enough for your hands to fit in.
  • Tape the bottom of the box shut. This side of the box will be facing the participant.
  • Leave the top of the box open.
  • Decorate your box!
  • Once decorated lay it on its side so the top that’s open is facing the away from the guesser.

ALTERNATIVE: If you don’t have a spare box lying around, any type of container or bag can work as long as it hides the item from sight.

3. Play the game!

Take one set of the items and put them in the box so they can’t be seen. Have the individual reach into the box/bag and guess by feel.

ALTERNATIVE: If you’re scared to feel something unknown or if you’re doing this for children, leave the other set of items on the floor so they can guess what it is.

You can change this game up by:

  • Challenging the individual to find one of the items as you describe them. Ex. I am thinking of something squishy, smooth, and cool. (Answer – shaving cream)
  • Heighten your sense of hearing. If you have at least two of each item, place one item in a closed box. Leave the other set of items on the floor visible. Have the individual shake the box with the hidden item in it and guess from what noise it makes what item is hidden inside.
